GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Tiffin University men's and women's swimming and diving team qualified five for championship finals on day two of the Calvin Winter Invite, Friday at Venema Aquatic Center.
For the men, Grand Valley State is in first with 751 points, followed by Calvin (2nd – 308 points) and Wabash (3rd – 302.5 points). Tiffin is sixth with 145 points, ahead of GLIAC foe Findlay.
Freshman Kyle Doss was second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:50.23). His time set the school record. Junior Pedro Van Isschot swam a school record 1:42.78 to place fifth in the 200 freestyle. The 200 free relay team of Doss, junior Ty Collins, freshman Ygor Zanardo and Van Iscchot was sixth (1:26.70, TU record).
Collins was eighth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.91. Swimming exhibition in the 100 back, Doss broke the school record with a mark of 51.95.
For the women, Grand Valley State is in first with 648 points, followed by Northern Michigan (2nd – 408 points) and Calvin (3rd – 363 points). Tiffin is seventh with 28 points.
Freshman Melinda Ulbrecht was seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.00). In the prelims, she broke the school record at 1:06.44. Ulbrecht swam 27.15 on the opening leg of the 200 free relay to set the school record for the 50 free. Junior Nicole Twarek broke the TU record in the 100 back at 1:10.86.
