Tiffin University (6-4) split a pair of games in Florida, defeating Western Oregon 2-0 before falling to Wayne State (Neb.) 4-2.
Against the Wolves, Sarah Klein pitched a gem, shutting out WOU on 7 hits with 6 strikeouts and no walks over 7 innings.
Klein held WOU in check but had to pitch out of jams in two innings. In the third, the Wolves had runners at 1st and 3rd with one out but Klein escaped, while she pulled a similar trick in the fifth inning when WOU had runners at 2nd and 3rd with two outs.
The Dragons were also held off the scoreboard until the sixth inning, when, after Gabrielle Hess singled and Libby Crow reached on a fielder's choice, Kaylee Savage drove them home with a single to give TU all the runs they would need. Klein allowed only two WOU batters to reach scoring position after the fourth inning.
Against Wayne State, the Dragons struck first, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Jamie Sevenish walked and was sacrificed to second. After Brooke Lambert reached on an error at shortstop which also moved Sevenish to third, the Dragons got their first run when Sevenish scampered home on a wild pitch. Lambert, who advanced to third on the wild pitch, then came home on Hayley Kobie's sacrifice fly to give TU the 2-0 lead.
WSC evened the score in the third inning, tallying two runs. The Dragons, however, found hits hard to come by, managing only three in the game. They had only one other chance to score in the game when they tried to rally in the fifth inning.
Kirsten Georges and Sevenish both singled and advanced to second and third with two outs but the Dragons could not manage to get them home.
Wayne State took the lead in the final frame. Two hits and a walk gave them a run to put them up 3-2, with WSC tacking on an insurance run to make the score 4-2.
Victoria Edwards took the loss, allowing 10 hits and 4 earned runs over 7 innings along with 4 strikeouts.
